At Woodlands we are committed to ensuring swimming takes place in school. Swimming is a compulsory part of the current national curriculum for PE and therefore we ensure that children have access to it.
At Woodlands we believe pupils should be taught to swim unaided for a distance of at least 25 metres, using recognised strokes, on their front and back, and demonstrate an understanding of water safety. All pupils complete a 12 week swimming programme in year 4 in order to meet government requirements for swimming.
We use the following facilities to facilitate our swimming programme:
Ellesmere Port Sports Village
Stanney Ln, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire CH65 9DB
Before children leave Woodlands Primary, we try to ensure that all children can at least swim 25m. If children are unable to do this still in Year 6, then additional swimming lessons are provided for these students to enable them to reach this goal.
In 2017-18, 80% (58/73) of Year 6 were able to swim 25m using a range of strokes effectively. All children could perform self rescue in a variety of water based situations. . Top up lessons were arranged for the additonal 20% (15/73) who were yet to achieve 25m. From these 15 - 11 achieved 25m after top up swimming interventions.
In 2018-19, 90% (63/70) of Year 6 were able to swim 25m using a range of strokes effectively. All children could perform self rescue in a variety of water based situations. Top up lessons were arranged for 20% of Y6 (14 children) who were yet to achieve 25m. From these 14 - 7 achieved 25m after top up swimming interventions.
