Sporting Heroes in Woodlands - 2015/16

Danny Macaskill

We have been enthused this year by Danny Macaskill who has inspired us to think about dealing with struggle, team work and persistance.

Danny Macaskill is a Scottish trials cyclist, from Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye. He works professionally as a street trials pro rider. He released a five-and-a-half-minute street trials video, filmed by his flatmate Dave Sowerby, on YouTube in 2009 to popular acclaim and widespread media attention.

Lee Whiteley

The GB Paralympic Sprinter, Lee Whiteley, visited the school on Friday 3rd March. Lee specialises in the 100m and 200m sprint. He has Cerebral Palsy and managed to break the European record for the 100m and 200m sprint at the World Championships in Lyon in 2013. Lee led a sponsored fitness circuit with all the pupils, and followed-up with a talk and a question and answer session. The children thoroughly enjoyed Lee demonstrating his skills and aspects of his training and even got some children to help him demonstrate. We hope that this has inspired our children to take up sport generally, but just as important that it has encouraged them to discover and then pursue their passion in life.
